I believe an effective teacher is willing to continue learning and developing in their weaknesses and strengths to provide ākonga with new skills and strategies to develop and achieve to their full potential. I believe every teacher should promote the physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development of every ākonga. An effective teacher needs to be capable of setting up an environment where ākonga can grow, learn and explore at their own developmental level. A successful teacher must continually reflect on their strategies after they have been applied, to understand what worked and what didn’t. They need to be capable to create improvements within their practice. I believe teachers should be able to recognise ākonga as individuals with unique strengths and weakness. This includes looking at the ākonga in a holistic way through their individuality, whanau, hapu, iwi and whakapapa. It is all teacher’s responsibility to recognise ākonga as a whole. It is vital that all ākonga are valued, nurtured and respected as individuals. Inclusion is essential, where every ākonga is equal, no ākonga should be excluded from having an education. The wellbeing of all ākonga is crucial, irrespective of their race, religion, gender, disability or cultural backgrounds. This moves towards my belief in supporting whanau from diverse backgrounds in their role as parents. When working with families I aim to form a close partnership with families/whanau. I want families/whanau to understand that they are and always will be the most important part of their children’s education. I understand that the first five years of a child’s life is when they are most intellectually absorbent. I value Montessori belief that the child’s mind is like a sponge. But unlike a sponge which in time dries up, the child’s mind incorporates what it soaks up.
